VoltGrid BESS1 MWh — 1000+ MWh

Application · data center

Energy storage for a data center — guaranteed power supply and arbitrage

Short answer

For a data center with 10 MW of IT load, a 10 MW / 20 MWh storage system provides 2 hours of runtime at full load while also participating in DSR. This is a reserve measured in hours, not in minutes as with a classic UPS.

  • Reserve measured in hours instead of minutes
  • Fewer genset starts and lower fuel consumption
  • DSR and arbitrage revenue from an asset that would exist anyway

The problem: a reserve that earns nothing

A classic UPS-plus-genset setup is a cost with no revenue. A BESS functions as a reserve with a longer hold-up time while simultaneously generating market revenue.

How it works

The PCS in grid-forming mode takes over supply of the islanded section in under 20 ms. The EMS maintains a minimum reserve SOC (typically 50%), trading the surplus capacity in the market.
