EMS — energy management system in a BESS installation

Short answer

The EMS decides when the storage system charges and discharges, and it is responsible for 100% of the installation's revenue. Standard integration includes Modbus TCP, IEC 61850, and an API to the aggregator's system.

  • Strategy stacking: capacity market, arbitrage, peak shaving, DSR
  • SOC reserve lockout for critical services
  • Availability reporting and capacity testing for LTSA

Operating strategies

  • Peak shaving based on measurement at the connection point
  • Arbitrage based on TGE price forecasts and the balancing market
  • Maintaining regulation bandwidth for aFRR / mFRR
  • Prioritizing the capacity obligation over other revenue streams

Integration with the surrounding environment

The EMS exchanges data with the BMS, PCS, revenue meters, fire safety system, and the investor's overarching control system. Protocols: Modbus TCP, IEC 61850, DNP3, REST API.

Reporting and warranty settlement

EMS data forms the basis for the annual capacity test and for settling capacity and availability guarantees under the LTSA. History is retained locally and in the cloud for a minimum of 10 years.
