VoltGrid BESS1 MWh — 1000+ MWh

Application · wind

Energy storage at a wind farm

Short answer

For a 20 MW wind farm, a typical storage system is 10 MW / 40 MWh in a 4-hour configuration. The main benefit is reduced imbalance costs from forecast error and full utilization of connection capacity during low-wind hours.

  • Reduced imbalance costs resulting from forecast error
  • Hybrid operation at a shared point of connection
  • Access to the capacity market and ancillary services for the whole asset

The problem: generation variability and imbalance

Wind generation forecast error translates directly into balancing market costs. A 2–4 h storage system allows closing the position within an hourly horizon and limiting deviations.

Hybrid installation

A shared point of connection for the farm and the storage system maximizes use of connection capacity. During low-wind hours, the storage system delivers energy, using the unutilized headroom of the connection.
