Fire safety for energy storage — approvals with the State Fire Service (PSP)

Short answer

A key element is module-level combustible gas detection, which identifies an event 10–30 minutes before ignition. Design standards also call for a minimum 3 m spacing between containers and a buffer zone from neighboring structures.

  • Gas detection before ignition, not smoke detection after ignition
  • LFP cells — no oxygen in the cathode structure, slower event progression
  • Sign-off by a certified fire safety expert and acceptance by the State Fire Service (PSP)

Why LFP

LFP chemistry has a higher thermal runaway onset temperature than NMC and does not release oxygen from the cathode. This is the primary reason why stationary storage systems use LFP exclusively.

Layers of protection

  • Battery management system (BMS) monitoring voltage and temperature of every cell
  • Combustible gas and carbon monoxide detection at module level
  • Zoned suppression system and emergency ventilation
  • Partitions and spacing between containers per the approved design
  • Remote shutdown and signaling to the facility's central system

Formal approvals

The design requires sign-off by a certified fire protection expert, and before commissioning, notification to and acceptance by the district commander of the State Fire Service (PSP). For large installations we also prepare a fire scenario and instructions for emergency services.
