PCS — power conversion systems in energy storage

Short answer

A standard PCS for a 20ft container has a power rating of 1.25–2.5 MW and an efficiency of 98.3–98.8%. Grid-forming mode allows the unit to operate as a voltage source and form an island without grid support.

  • 98.3–98.8% efficiency at the converter level
  • Grid-forming — islanded operation and synthetic inertia support
  • Compliant with NC RfG and DSO requirements

Topologies and power sizing

The PCS is sized to the block's power rating, not its capacity. A 5 MWh container in a 2-hour configuration needs 2.5 MW of converter power; in a 4-hour configuration, 1.25 MW is sufficient.

Efficiency and round-trip efficiency

System-level AC-AC efficiency is the product of PCS efficiency, transformer efficiency, and parasitic losses. A realistic figure for a modern liquid-cooled system is 86–89% at 0.5C.

Grid-forming and grid code requirements

  • Grid-following operation as standard for grid-connected installations
  • Grid-forming for islanded operation, data centers, and stability support
  • LVRT/HVRT, Q(U) and P(f) regulation compliant with NC RfG
  • Interface to the EMS and to the operator's SCADA system
